Research Paper on Women Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, itââ¬â¢s the only thing that ever has, commented Margaret Mead after a lifetime of observing diversity in cultures from around the world. After 150 years of fighting for equality among the sexes, people today have no idea of the struggle that women went through so that women of future generations could have the same privileges as men. Seven generations have come since the womens rights movement and the women of these generations have different opportunities in family life, religion, government, employment, and education that women fought for. The Womens Rights Movement began with a small group of people that questioned why human lives, especially those of women, were unfairly constricted. These women also worked deliberately to create a better world. The movement marks itââ¬â¢s beginning as July 13, 1848. This movement didnââ¬â¢t just happen because someone thought that it was time for women to have the same rights as men, women of all ages came together at the start of it in order to fight for equality among the sexes. Women have affected changes in laws and human nature by holding meetings, petition drives, lobbying, public speaking, and also by demonstrating nonviolent resistance. Leaders of the movement fought for freedom in family life, government, religion, employment, and education. Over the years, they have successfully gained access to these freedoms and luxuries because a group of women never gave up and fought for the things that they believed in. As a leader of the Womenââ¬â¢s Rights Movement, Elizabeth Cady Stanton drafted the Declaration of Sentiments which drew its inspiration form the Declaration of Independence. Through this declaration, Stanton enumerated areas of life where women were treated unjustly compared to the treatment of men. By using this writing, Stanton campaigned for womenââ¬â¢s rights by paralleling them to the American Symbol of Liberty. The most famous arguments from the writing that are heard over and over again throughout the duration of the movement was: We hold these truths to be self- evident by their Creator with certain inalienable rights that among these are life, liberty, a and the pursuit of happiness. The history of mankind is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations on the part of man toward woman, having indirect object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over her. To prove this, let facts be submitted to candid word, said Stanton of the abuses of women. After having said this, she went into the specific abuses. The offenses included: married women were legally dead in the eyes of the law, women were not allowed to vote, women had to submit to laws when thber had no voice in the in their formation, married women had no property rights, husbands had legal power over women and responsibility for their wives to the extent that they could imprison or beat them with impunity, divorces and child custody favored men and gave no rights to women, women has to pay property taxes even though they could not have any access to property ownership, most occupancies were closed to women but the women who worked earned a fraction of the salary of men, women were not allowed to enter p rofessions, women had no right to and education after high school, women could very rarely partake in any church function, and finally, women were robbed of their self-confidence and self-respect, therefore making them completely dependent on men. Upon introducing those offenses to other women, Stanton and other leaders of the movement began planning the first Womens Rights International Convention that was to be held in Seneca Falls, New York, July 19-20, 1848. During the two-days of discussion at the convention, the Declaration of Sentiments and twelve other resolutions received unanimous endorsement. The only resolution that did not pass was the call for womenââ¬â¢s enfranchisement. To most, the idea that women should have the right to vote was inconceivable and unheard of. The suffrage victory drew near in 1919. Around this time, the National American Woman Suffrage Association was in the process of reconfiguring itself into the League of Women Voters. Through this league, members would ensure that women would take their hard-won vote seriously. They would also make sure that women used the privilege wisely. Shortly after the formation of the League of Women Voters, the Womenââ¬â¢s Bureau of the Department of Labor began in 1920. The purpose for establishing the Bureau was to gather information about the situation of women at work. It also advocated for changes that it saw necessary to society. Many women voters also became actively involved by lobbying for legislation to protect women workers from abuse and unsafe working conditions. The Womens Bureau of the Department of Labor served as inspiration for Alice Paul, a Womenââ¬â¢s Rights Movement leader, to draft the Equal Rights Amendment in 1923. She thought that this would be the wisest step in the fight for equality among the sexes. This Amendment would guarantee that women would be granted the same rights as men. Basically, women would be guaranteed employment of their choice and a higher education if they so desired, regardless of their location. After women had won the fight for basic freedoms and privileges, a second-wave of the Womens Rights Movement began rapidly approaching in the sixties. This part of the movement was called the Birth Control Movement. A public health nurse, Margaret Sanger, initiated this part of the Womenââ¬â¢s Rights Movement. In her opinion, if women had the right to vote and other privileges, then they should have the right to control their own body, especially when it came to their own reproduction and their own sexuality. The goal of this wave was to allow women the privilege of deciding whether they would become mothers or not and if so, when that would happen. Throughout this time, women began to advocate for womenââ¬â¢s reproductive rights and surrogate motherhood. They also began to fight for protection from pornography and sexual harassment. In the fight for womenââ¬â¢s reproductive rights, women fought for the right to terminate pregnancy through abortion or prevent pregnancy through birth control pills. For the surrogate motherhood issue, some women argued that it was the free right of women to rent out their womb. In other words, they thought that it was their right to have children for the women who couldnt bare children. In the struggle for protection from pornography, women argued that it could be potentially dangerous for women and that it was degrading to them. Some women also said that pornography was a free speech issue and that women could choose for themselves what they wanted because of the First Amendment. In the debate over sexual harassment, women wanted more protection and punishment from sex offenders because of the trauma that rape puts women through. In their defense, it also causes oftentimes-serious medical problems as well as emotional trauma. In the fight for reproductive rights, sexual harassment also alluded towards abortion. One of the topics brought up was that if a woman was raped and she got pregnant from the offender, she should have the right to abort the pregnancy because it was unwanted. Thus, these topics brought about the most serious and controversial issue that is still being debated over today: abortion. Abortion is often considered one of the most controversial issues of the post-suffrage movement. Abortion is a surgical procedure in which the fetus is killed in many different ways. The most popular form is by partial- birth abortion in which the doctor delivers almost the entire unborn baby except for the head. Once the body is out, the doctor then drills a hole in the babyââ¬â¢s head and sticks a catheter inside the baby to suction out the brain. This cause the babyââ¬â¢s heads to collapse and in turn kills the baby. The issue of abortion was first brought up in front of the Supreme Court in 1973 when t6he Roe vs. Wade case was introduced. This case legalized all abortions. The courts decided that it was the right of women to decide whether they wanted to have a child if they were to get pregnant. Although abortion is a very emotional and controversial subject, it is also something that women have to decide for themselves. Many of the rights that women have won because of the Womens Rights Movement are based on opinions. Women can either take advantage of their freedoms and privileges, or they can just not do anything about it. For instance, it is basically up to a woman if she decides to vote or not. The womens rights controversy does not only exist in the United States. In many other parts of the world, such as India, women suffer from discrimination because of their gender. They suffer from many grievances that women from previous generations suffered from before they started the Womenââ¬â¢s rights Movement. Women and men will enjoy, in practice, equal rights, equal access to and control over productive resources, education, health, land, other forms of property, shelter, credit, information, knowledge, skills, technology and markets by adoption of affirmative action wherever necessary, and by the removing identified impediments. This was an excerpt from Indiaââ¬â¢s country paper at the Fourth United Nations Conference that dealt with womenââ¬â¢s rights. Many of the inequalities that women suffer from in India are rooted in the traditions of its communities and are both social and cultural in nature. Under the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women, India is legally obligated to protect womenââ¬â¢s rights. Also, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights guarantees that womenââ¬â¢s political and civil rights will be protected by the Indian government. Both of these state that all states parties will take all appropriate measures that will eliminate discrimination against women in all aspects of Indian culture. The CEDAW also ensures that parties will modify all social and cultural patterns in the conduct of men and women. In doing this, superiority will not be placed on men and will be shared equally among men and women. In India, women are looked down on because they are supposedly not as capable as men. In some cases, abortions are performed in India once the mother and father find out whether their unborn baby is supposed to be a girl or boy. Mothers choose to do this because girls are not considered to be as fit as boys. They also do this to avoid paying large dowries on the marriage of their daughter. The beliefs that girls are not as fit as boys have to do with the social and cultural beliefs. In India, having a girl means many different things from bad luck to financial ruin and extreme hardship. Women in India also have to worry about the threat of rape. Rape is often targeted more towards women belonging to lower castes and tribal women. This is because women of lower castes and tribal women are very rarely acknowledged because of social and cultural norms. As in other countries all over the world, rape is extremely common in India. Regardless of where you live, what country you go to visit, there is going to be discriminations placed on women because of gender. Unfortunately, in some countries, women would be arrested for standing up for what they believe in. Women in the United States stood up for what they believed in without being punished for it in most cases because of the First Amendment. Women in other countries are often sometimes afraid to voice their opinions because of the consequences of doing so. In some countries, the standard for criminal offenses are very different from that of the United States and the punishment terms are often very different. So in conclusion, regardless of where you go, equality among the sexes is an ongoing battle for women. They fight for the basic rights of humans while fighting against traditions and social and cultural norms. Women today are faced with so many more opportunities than women of previous generations. However, many women are held back from these opportunities because of the belief of men that they are superior to women. Basically, no matter what women do, there will always be discrimination against women whether it is for employment opportunities or educational opportunities. In todayââ¬â¢s world, women have won many more privileges because of how much times have changed since the start of the Womenââ¬â¢s Rights Movement. As stated before, the struggle is an ongoing battle that will most likely never end.

Even so, both stories have great examples of fighting, victory, and glory. ââ¬Å"Now though I may win my perfect gloryâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Line 64 Homer) This quote helps show the desire Achilles has for glory. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve never known fear, as a youth I fought in endless battles. I am old, now, but I will fight again, seek fame still, if the dragon hiding in his tower dares to face me. (Line 607-611 Beowulf Poet) This quote shows Beowulf has a similar desire for fame and glory, along with the confidence to be victorious. Both relate the tales of a hero, and as we follow them, we learn about them in the process. The story of Beowulf seems too good to be true in a sense. As you read, you notice that every woman is beautiful, every warrior is good and every cause is worth risking life and limb for. What is realistic is that every human being wants to be loved and accepted while also being the hero. King Hrothgar is a fatherly example that deserves the love that Beowulf has for him. Hail, Hrothgar! My youth have been filled with glory. Now Grendelââ¬â¢s name has echoed in our land: Sailors have brought us stories of Herot, the bestâ⬠¦When the moon hangs in skies the sun had lit, light and life fleeing together. â⬠(Line 140-148 Beowulf Poet) This quote shows the fondness that the king and Beowulf have for each other, and it shows a comparison of light and life. In the case of Achilles in the Iliad, everything is a bit more believable. The theme of life and death is brought to the readerââ¬â¢s attention when Patroclus is killed. As a result, Hector is also killed because of Patroclusââ¬â¢s death. Achilles isnââ¬â¢t perfect, along with other characters such as Hector and King Agmemmon. These faults make this story more realistic and believable, while also adding truth to the story. Bad decisions are made, such as Achilles allowing his good friend, Patroclus, to enter battle and be killed. ââ¬Å"My greatest friend is gone: Patroclus, comrade in my arms, whom I held dear above all others- dear as myself ââ¬â now gone, lost; Hector cut him down, despoiled him of my own arms, massive and fine, a wonder in all manââ¬â¢s eyes. (Line 13-18 Homer) In this quote is an example of life and death and how it made Achilles wants revenge on Hector. This also gives Achilles a type of ââ¬Å"powerâ⬠to choose whether to take Hectorââ¬â¢s life. Beowulf is humble, and although he has the personality of a hero more than Achilles, he does not see his own value or his own significance. Achilles, on the other hand, could not be more proud. His awareness and consideration of his own skills and his own value are an obvious difference to the humility and mildness of Beowulf. Do not attempt to keep me from the fight, though you love me; you cannot make me listen. â⬠(Line 70 Beowulf Poet) This quote shows an example of Achilles attitude toward himself and others when it comes to a fight. This also shows how Beowulf has more good in him then Achilles. Beowulf having a personality with great goodness, makes the decision to fight the greatest evil (Grendel) with only his hands. ââ¬Å"My hands alone shall fight for me, struggle for life against the monster God must decide who will be given to deaths cold grip. (Line 172-175 Beowulf Poet) This quote supports Beowulfââ¬â¢s fight against evil, and how the fight will determine life and death. Beowulf and the Iliad are stories of great heroes. They take us through their stories and battles while teaching the reader about them along the way. The Iliad is easier to believe, while Beowulf seems too good to be true. Both stories relate to the cultures past and teach us about each character. Beowulf and the Iliad battle through evil and relate to each other through life and death.

And because it was now a tested technology investors who were normally cautious were willing to put their capital into these ventures which instead of pouring iron to make guns now made iron ore into stoves and pots. The second critical underpinning of the first industrial revolution was the development of a home market in Britain. The first British industrialists manufactured textiles; specifically cotton for the home market. The growth of the home market in Britain promoted industrialization in several ways. First, it was a steady market which able to cushion the export market which was very dynamic and had sudden fluctuations. This allowed a steady rate of growth even when exports fell. Second, the home market started the process of urbanization by causing people to leave the agricultural sector of the economy and move to the cities to work in the cotton and textile factories. This urbanization had a snowballing effect throughout the economy because it caused other business and factories to open in the cities to support this new urban class. The current eraââ¬â¢s education is known to be defined by students themselves, including their academic success, the value of educators and instructional quality in America, learning standards adopted by each individual state, anxiety, the role played by parents outside of a school setting, and much more. Most Americans believe that studentââ¬â¢s standardized test scores are the only legitimate indicator of a schoolââ¬â¢s efficiency. Since 1965, when the United States Elementary and Secondary Education Act became a law, standardized testing has been used to evaluate American public schools. The ultimate goal of standardized testing is to examine how well teachers are preparing students and to improve student achievement. Some people would argue that standardized testing accomplishes the goal of examining educators, allowing them to better their skills for the future, while others would argue that the idea of standardized testing damages the educational system altogether. The leading debate that concerns most, but is brushed off by many, is whether the success of standardized testing should be used to indicate a studentââ¬â¢s, teacher, and/or schoolââ¬â¢s capabilities. The key objective of the American educational system is for every student to graduate from high school, college and career ready. In 1959, when Everet Lindquist launched the _American College Test_ (ACT), it was ââ¬Å"designed as a test of studentââ¬â¢s general educational development and could be used with other criteria to predict student success at the college level.â⬠After the launching of this well-known assessment, testing was being put in use in many educational settings. In 1954, as a part of President Lyndon B. Johnsonââ¬â¢s, _â⬠WAR ON POVERTYâ⬠_ , the _Elementary and Secondary Education Act_à _(ESEA)_ was introduced. This act was reauthorized in 2001, which is now known as _No Child Left Behind_ _(NCLB)_ . This reauthorized act ââ¬Å"requires states to develop assessments in basic skills. States must give assessments to all students at select grade levels in order to receive federal school funding.â⬠Race to the Top was introduced by President Barack Obama in 2012, which is a school district competition across the United States. This initiative was put forth to raise standards, with the goal of college and career readiness. In addition, Race to the Top has lead states to develop ââ¬Å"rigorous standards and better assessmentsâ⬠, ââ¬Å"support teachers and school leaders to become more effectiveâ⬠, and provide intervention for low performing schools. (Whitehouse.gov) Now that Race to the Top has become worldwide, it has become a controversial topic. Civil Rights organizations have argued that ââ¬Å"federal funding should be based on need, not competition.â⬠As a result of the Race, teachers will be evaluated in relation to their students test scores. In a Huffington Post, updated in 2011, research professor and author Diane Ravitch stated that ââ¬Å"it will make the current standardized test of basic skills more important than ever, and even more time and resources will be devoted to raising scores on these tests.â⬠The new era of Race to the Top will cause the importance of standardized testing to increase, and the demand for privately managed charter schools to increase. In June of 2010, ââ¬Å"North Carolina adopted the Common Core State Standards in K-12 Mathematics and K-12 English Language Arts.â⬠Beginning in 2012-13, the course of study was implemented in public schools across the state. In conjunction with these standards, ââ¬Å"common examsâ⬠were put into effect. ââ¬Å"â⬠Common examsâ⬠or ââ¬Å"Measures of student learningâ⬠refers to new assessments being developed to measure teacher effectiveness.â⬠A teacherââ¬â¢s effectiveness can reflect on how well a student performs on his or her exams. Since teachers are not told what is on exams or standardized tests such as this, they must prepare their students based on the standards put forth by the state and assume it will be the same material when testing. A common exam is ââ¬Å"given in classes where students are not given an end of grade or end of course testsâ⬠and is ââ¬Å"created by local educators and the North Carolinaà Department of Public Instruction to show the impact of teacher performance on student learning.â⬠The success of these standardized tests ââ¬Å"provides students with feedback on their knowledge and skillsâ⬠(Astro.Temple.edu). On the other hand, it ââ¬Å"motivates teachers to identify their areas of strength and weakness in teaching plans so that they can reconstruct themâ⬠(Astro.Temple.edu). This forms a relationship between teacher performance and student learning. On the other hand, many parents, students, as well as educators believe that standardized testing isnââ¬â¢t a great indication on a studentââ¬â¢s knowledge. Standardized testing evaluates a studentââ¬â¢s performance in one day, excluding any external factors. Many teachers are known to ââ¬Å"â⬠teach to the testâ⬠which can hinder a studentââ¬â¢s overall learning potentialâ⬠(Office of Work/Life Columbia University). There are many students who ââ¬Å"are smart and understand the content, but it doesnââ¬â¢t show on the test. Many students develop test anxiety which hinders performanceâ⬠(Office of Work/Life Columbia University). For federal funding, schools depend on their studentââ¬â¢s to perform well. ââ¬Å"Competition among schoolsâ⬠can sometimes take place (Office of Work/Life Columbia University). This could be a hard factor to overcome, when schools have exceptional and special education students. Special education include ââ¬Å"individual or small group instruction, curriculum or teaching modifications, assistive technology, transition services and other specialized services such as physical, occupational, and speech therapyâ⬠(CHADD: National Resource Center on ADHD). Students that are considered ââ¬Å"exceptionalâ⬠are required to take the same standardized test as student without learning restrictions, so how exactly is someone at a lower level given such high standards? The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, enacted in 1990 and reauthorized in 1997 and 2004, was designed to ââ¬Å"ensure services to children with disabilities throughout the nationâ⬠(idea.ed.gov US Department of Education). This was designed to ensure that all student, ages 3-21, receive appropriate education regardless of any disability. In addition to this, theà disability they are diagnosed with must ââ¬Å"affect his or her educational performance and must need special education in order to receive an appropriate educationâ⬠(CHADD: National Resource Center on ADHD). ââ¬Å"Many children in exceptional childrenââ¬â¢s programs have physical, mental, or social disabilities. In North Carolina, these academically gifted children are classified as EC, because they have different educational needs than the average childâ⬠(Exceptional Children UNC School of Education). Since No Child Left Behind was passed, ââ¬Å"students with disabilities must be included in state testing and assessed against the same standard of proficiency as other students to determine whether schools are making the required ââ¬Å"adequate yearly progressâ⬠towards goals for academic proficiency. The regular assessment is given to students with special needs, and they are given appropriate accommodations. Appropriate accommodations include extra time to take the test, larger print, a quiet room, Braille, having the instructions repeated periodically, or more breaks than normally allowedâ⬠(Boehner 10). In addition to the special benefits granted, an Individualized Education Program, (IEP), is designed for each child with a disability. Students under this program have a customized ââ¬Å"learning planâ⬠on how they will be evaluated and not whether they will be evaluated. ââ¬Å"Results from the National Assessment of Educational Progress, also known as a Nationââ¬â¢s Report Card, standardized test, which is used and measured the same in all states, provide useful information on the achievement and progress of students with disabilities. The results from the Nationââ¬â¢s Report Card show progress, as well as gaps, between students with disabilities and nondisabled studentsâ⬠(Aron and Loprest 112-113).
